Hand Carved Coquille Nut Egg Box 19th Century Flea Trap Pomander Needle Case

About the Item

A beautiful hand carved coquille nut egg box. Beautiful carving, great patina, unscrews at center to open. The original use was a flea trap, things were different in the old days and pesticides were not available. So some stuff just flourished, unfortunately. This little box was used in clothing, wigs, beds, other furniture, etc. A bit of fabric would be placed inside the egg, with blood and honey on it. The idea is to attract the fleas, then they stick to the honey. Pleasant, hahaha. Could also be used as a pomander, people didn't bath so much back then. Some people call these needle cases, probably not. But use it for what ever you want. Great egg collectible.
