1960s Vintage Duke Kahanamoku Hawaiian Surfboard

About the Item

Mid-1960s Duke Kahanamoku Hawaiian style 9’9 classic longboard made in the mid 1960s. Features attractive red panels, single wood stringer design, and stunning 17 piece redwood/balsa wood fin. A fantastic example of a 1960s vintage longboard bearing the name of "The Father of Surfing" Duke Kahanamoku, the Hawaiian Olympic swimming champion who popularized the ancient Hawaiian sport of surfing. Duke Kahanamoku "The Father of Modern Surfing" was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1890. He was Hawaiian Olympic gold medal swimmer as well as Hawaii’s representative to the world throughout the 20th century. Kahanamoku was celebrated for decades as both a swimming and surfing hero. One female admirer described him as “the most magnificent human male God ever put on the earth”. Kahanamoku socialized with sports and entertainment legends including Babe Ruth, Charlie Chaplin, and John Wayne. In 1957, Kahanamoku appeared on the popular NBC show "This is Your Life". An iconic statue honors the "Father of Surfing" at Waikiki Beach in his hometown of Honolulu.
