Antique Hickory Golf Club, Cleek by Anderson, Army and Navy

About the Item

This smooth face cleek is stamped on the club head with the stamp of Anderson of Anstruther and 'A & N.C.S.L', which stands for Army and Navy Co-Op Society Ltd. This suggests that the club was made by Anderson of Anstruther for the Army and Navy stores. The stamps are a little faint but readable. The head has a wonderful patination to it and the original hickory shaft is also stamped Army & Navy C.S.L. The suede grip is a little worn but looks original with the listing beneath. This is a fine club. Decorative and a great collectable, circa 1885. Alex Anderson, Anstruther, fife, Scotland. Alex was one of the largest club manufactures and worked well into the 1930s. He inherited the business from his father, James, in the late 1800s. They are known as the 'Andersons of Anstruther' and should not be confused with the other Andersons within the golfing trade. Anderson used the plain 'arrow' cleek mark from 1908 onwards and it would always point to the toe of the club. Other clubmaking companies used the 'arrow' mark but usually with the word 'Accurate'.

Hickory Shafted Rut Iron. A good quality smooth faced rut iron, also known as a rut niblick, rutter or track iron. Rut irons were commonly used to hit the ball from cart tracks and deep ruts etc. Young Tom Morris was known to hit his rut iron from the fairway to play a high shot onto the green, a shot only a player of his calibre could master. They say he even managed to get backspin on the ball. The golf club is with hickory shaft and a polished sheep skin grip. The head has no makers marks, but it is a high-quality club and heavy in weight, has a long hosel (10 ½ cm) and a thick blade, not to be confused with the later 'Rut Niblick' that was lighter, thinner blade and a shorter hosel. A nice desirable golf collectable...
