About the Item

This is an exceptionally rare original vintage Duke Invitational Surfing Championships Hawaii Poster, from 1968. Red ink on parchment colored paper offers subtle contrast in an iconic poster that will stand alone or compliment any surf collection. The contest started in 1965 as the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championships, in 1969 the name was changed to "Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Classic." This poster, from 1968 offers an early document celebrating both the event and the exceptional surfing ability of those chosen to compete including, many of whom went on to become Surf Legends: Edie Aikau, Ben Aipa, Jim Blears, Joey Cabell, Corky Carroll, Ryan Dotson, George Downing, Mike Doyle, Jackie Eberle, Charlie Galanto, Ricky Grigg, Jeff Hakman, Billy Hamilton, Fred Hemmings, Barry Kanaiaupuni, Jimmy Lucas, Rusty Miller, Felipe Pomar, Paul Strauch, Jock Sutherland, Mike Turkington, Bruce Valluzzi, Butch Van Artsdalen and Nat Young. The Duke Invitational meant just that. 24 of the best big wave surfers of the day were summoned by Duke Kahanamoku, The Father of Modern Day Surfing, to the North Shore of Oahu. There they competed in the only big wave riding competition of the time. Traditionally this competition was held at Sunset Beach but could be moved to Waimea or other spots where the conditions were better. The surfers would wait on hand (often for days) until the judges decided that the surf was large enough (ideally twenty foot plus) for the competition to commence. Professional framed in black wood frame. Frame measures: 34 inches high x 29 inches wide x 1 inch deep. Poster measures: 33.5 inches high x 22.5 inches wide.
