Final Clark Foam Surfboard Blank Signed by Surfing Legends

About the Item

The final Clark Foam surfboard mold produced before the company abruptly shut down in 2005. This 6'7 R "Concave + forward vee" mold was glassed and signed by many of the biggest names in the surfing industry including but not limited to the late Terry Martin, the late Larry Gordon, Skip Frye, Mike Hynson, Robert August, Reynolds Yater, Don Hansen, Phil Edwards, Larry Bertlemann, Peter Townend, David Nuuhiwa, Corky Carroll, Bill Hamilton, Randy Rarick, Paul Strauch, Steve Walden, Joe Roper, and many others. Over it's 40 year history, Clark Foam was the world's leader in the production of foam surfboard blanks — foam slabs, reinforced with one or more wooden strips or "stringers" that were cast into the rough shape of a surfboard and used by surfboard shapers to create finished surfboards. Clark Foam supplied between 70-90% of the market, maintaining a veritable monopoly in the United States. They dominated the competition by producing an estimated 350,000 to 400,000 blanks per year, or 1,000 - 1,500 blanks per day. On Dec. 5, 2005 the company abruptly shut down, citing difficulties with government regulatory agencies over the chemicals and equipment used in addition to claims filed against Clark Foam by former employees. The abrupt closing of Clark Foam sent shockwaves through the industry and left surfboard shapers scrambling for new suppliers. Since Clark Foam closed, surfboard manufacturing has turned to new and innovative materials, such as carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer, hollow blanks, and new "flex" materials used by various companies.

A very nice "Surf Culture" first edition of the book "Surf" signed by author, surf industry pioneer and "Surfer Magazine" founder John Severson at the California Surf Museum in Huntington Beach, CA, circa 2014. The book is in great condition with vibrant colors and measures 9.75"W x 12.5"H; it includes the original dust jacket and signed "Cowabunga John Severson" in black marker on the inside title page A "must have" for any surf memorabilia collector! #3177 The book "Surf" came out in 2014 and was characterized by the New York Times as follows: "John Severson's Surf" is a book that presents the languid-meets-extreme-thrills lifestyle of surfing through paintings and vivid photography. Presented mainly through Mr. Severson's paintings and photography, the book serves a dual purpose as a celebration of a Zeilg-like life to envy and as an implicit slap across the cheek of those status-conscious, white-collar elements that are getting ever fresher in their advances upon the wave-riding lifestyle that he helped start back in the 1950's. (Jim Rutenberg The New York Times, Styles Section) #2492 About the artist: John Severson, well known as the creator of the internationally acclaimed SURFER Magazine, grew up surfing off the beaches of Southern California. He began his career as a painter, selling his first works while finishing his Master’s Degree at Long Beach State College. In the ’50s he became the first person to create a large body of art relating to the Hawaii-California surf culture. Since then he has provided a steady output of oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints. In 1958, John used his art, photography, and surfing passion to create a popular surf movie series. His films included SURF SAFARI, SURF FEVER, BIG WEDNESDAY, and PACIFIC VIBRATIONS. Severson's smash hits posters from the ’50s and ’60s, remain collector favorites. As a surfer, Severson was known for riding big waves, and for his innovative performance style in big surf. In 1961, he won the Peru International Surfing Championships and was a finalist in the U.S. and Hawaiian Championships. With the founding of SURFER, John’s art focused on the magazine and graphics. His painting “Surf Bebop” was selected as the outstanding cover painting of 1963 by Communication Arts. Surfer During the ’60s, he authored two surf books...
