First International Foursome, Vintage Golf Print, Leith Links 1862

About the Item

First International Foursome after Allen Stewart. A rare original photolithograph print titled 'The First International Foursome, Played on Leith Links, 1682'. The print is taken from the original painting by the Scottish painter and illustrator, Allen Stewart. Stewart's original was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1919, the subject is the foursome on Leith Links in which the Duke of York, later James VII of Scotland / II of England, took part. The golf match came about after a discussion arose between the Duke and two English noblemen as to whether golf had been played as long in England as it had in Scotland. The Duke championed the claims of Scotland and quoted acts of the Scottish Parliament dating to 1457 with reference to the game. Similar evidence not forthcoming for England, with stakes arranged, they proposed to play a game of golf on Leith Links to decide it. The Duke's partner was an Edinburgh cobbler, John Paterson, who came from a long line of golfers. The golf match is now known as the first international golf match of which Scotland won. The Duke generously split the winnings with Paterson who used it to build a house in Canongate, Edinburgh, the building later became known as 'Golfer's Land'. The Duke placed a plaque on the wall of the building which included a coat of arms with an outstretched hand bearing a golf club and the motto, "Far and Sure". The building was demolished in 1960. The golf print is in a modern frame with the original back board with a paper label on the back with the similar information. Printed along the top of the print is 'Copyright. Published by the British Art Company Ltd, 93 New Bond Street, London, W1, Printed in England'. 1967 Alcan Golfer of the Year Championship By Arthur Weaver. A colourful golf lithograph signed by the artist, Arthur Weaver, of the 18th green at St Andrews. The picture depicting Gay Brewer putting on the 18th green at St Andrews (Royal and Ancient Golf Club) in the 1967 Alcan Tournament. Gay Brewer beat Bill Casper by four strokes in a playoff to earn the biggest jackpot ever given to a tournament winner at that time. Title of the print, 18th Green, Royal & Ancient, Alcan Tournament, October 1967, Winner Gay Brewer, U.S.A. 'Putting'. Published in 1968 by Frost & Reed Limited of Bristol and London, England. Copyright in all countries, including the U.S.A. Foreign. Image size, H. 51 cm W. 64 cm Size with border, H. 59 cm W. 70 cm The Alcan Golfer of the Year Championship, also known as the Alcan Open, was an international golf tournament played from 1967 to 1970. It was sponsored by Alcan Aluminum Ltd. of Canada, a long-time corporate sponsor of professional golf on international circuits. The tournament was dreamed up by a Montreal magazine publisher named Hilles Pickens and a Montreal radio broadcaster named Doug Smith. The idea was to use four tournaments in the U.S. and four in Great Britain to qualify for a tournament at St Andrews. They sold the idea to Aluminium Ltd. of Canada, which was at the time changing its name to Alcan. Alcan thought the tournament would be a fine way to promote the new title with both the public and big buyers all over the world. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus had qualified to play in the tournament but sent their regrets, as did top U.S. money winners Dan Sikes and Julius Boros. For big-name attractions the tournament had to rely on Casper, Brewer and Doug Sanders. Casper and Brewer played fine golf at the windy St Andrews course and after three rounds they were tied with England's 22-year-old Brian Barnes, at four under par. On Sunday Barnes fell back and come the 18th hole Casper and Brewer were tied at 283. The playoff was played on the Monday over the full 18 holes. St Andrews "The Home of Golf" is on the Fife Coast of eastern Scotland and is considered the oldest and most iconic golf course in the world. The Old Course is 6721 yards with a par of 72. It is famous for the 'Swilcan Bridge' spanning the first and 18th holes and 'Hell Bunker'. Everyone who plays the 18th hole walks over the 700-year-old bridge, with it featuring in many iconic pictures of St Andrews. The Old Course remains a public golf course, open to all and apart from the clubhouse for the Royal and Ancient, there are clubhouses overlooking the links for The St Andrews Golf Club...

  • Antique Golf Print, Royal North Devon Golf Club, Photogravure of Westward Ho
    Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Royal North Devon Golf Club 1893 by Mayall & Co. Ltd. A great image of the members of the 'Royal North Devon Golf Club, Westward Ho!' from 1893. The figures are all photographs superimposed onto a painted background of the course. In the margin is printed 'Permanent Autotype, Produced by Mayall & Co. Ltd. 73 Piccadilly'. The image appears very much photographic but is more of a photomechanical print rather than a photograph. John Jabez Edwin Paisley Mayall (1813-1901) was an English photographer who in 1860 took the first carte-de-visite photographs of Queen Victoria. Taken from Royal North Devon:- Royal North Devon at Westward Ho! Can rightly claim to be the cradle of English Golf. Founded in 1864, it is the oldest golf course in the country and is regarded as the St Andrews of the South. The golf course is as tough as any of the UK's more famous links layouts and has recently been placed in Golf World 's 'Top 100 Courses in the World' that a golfer 'must play'. Not only is Royal North Devon a great course, it is also a place of huge historical importance. Inside the warmly welcoming clubhouse, the golf museum, honours boards and the clubs top competition trophies are worth a visit on their own and help to tell the story of the game and this remarkable club's unique place in it. Above all, this is great, natural golf that is largely unchanged from 100 years ago when Harold Hilton et al pronounced Westward Ho! As England's No 1 competition golf course. RND is pure, raw exhilaration and ultimately the experience of playing a fast running links in a stiff breeze still tests the very best in the game. Many of the great players of the last 100 years were regular competitors at RND but the greatest of them all is without doubt John Henry Taylor...

  • Manly P Hall, the Secret Teachings of All Ages, First Edition Book & 4 Prints
    By TASCHEN
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
The classic encyclopedia of the arcane in an expanded edition. Renowned philosopher and lecturer Manly P. Hall’s masterful encyclopedia of ancient symbols, hidden rituals, and arcane practices has remained a classic since first published in 1928. Hall’s densely detailed writings explore topics ranging from Hermeticism to Tarot, Egyptian mythology to Pythagorean theory. Each chapter is accompanied by the vivid illustrations of artist J. Augustus Knapp, with additional images by Mihran Serailian found in the companion volume, each taking their own unique approach to nearly 60 artworks depicting occult subject matter. The initial concept for what became known as Hall’s “Great Book”, first began in 1923 when the young Los Angeles-based orator began a months-long trip around the globe. Circumnavigating by ship, Hall visited Egypt, China and India, immersing himself in the philosophical and religious history of each country. Upon his return he spent the next five years penning his massive compendium of philosophy and myth. Nearly a century after its release, this iconic masterwork has been reproduced for the first time from the rare and extravagant original edition. This meticulously-restored version of Hall’s “Great Book” is also accompanied by an expansive companion book, featuring condensed summaries of each chapter of The Secret Teachings, alongside newly-discovered artworks, rare photography...
