1908, Short-Toed Snake Eagle 'Circaetus gallicus' on a Tree Stump
About the Item
The short-toed snake eagle (Circaetus gallicus) is found in many places worldwide, including southwest and southeast Europe, northwest Africa, western China, and Indonesia. Its name betrays what is mainly on its menu: snakes. When hunting snakes, the eagle swoops to the ground and grabs its prey with its talons. Then he crushes the head of the snake or snatches it off with his talons or beak. Although the bird is not immune to snake venom, it can swallow the snakes without being bitten. It digests the venom in its gut. The thick plumage on its legs also protects it from snake bites. The beautifully preserved specimen sits proudly on a tree stump.
