Set of Red Deer Antlers on Oak Shield by Spicer of Leamington

About the Item

Antique Set Of Mounted Spicer Red Deer Antlers. A pair of 11 point red deer antlers with skull cap, mounted onto a shaped back board by British taxidermist, Peter Spicer. These stag antlers are an excellent wall display and are mounted onto an ebonized shield. The rear of the backboard impressed 'P. Spicer & Sons, Taxidermists, Leamington' and written in pencil '1921 Major Watson'. The Red Deer (Cervus elaphus), or Red Stag, is one of the largest deer species that inhabits most of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains region, Asia Minor, Iran, parts of western Asia, and central Asia. It also inhabits the Atlas Mountains region between Morocco and Tunisia in north-western Africa. The red deer is the largest non-domesticated mammal still existing in the Netherlandss, United Kingdom and Ireland. The Barbary stag (which resembles the western European red deer) is the only member of the deer family represented in Africa. Only the stags have antlers, which are made of bone and grow at a rate of 2 ½ cm (1inch) a day. The antlers start growing in the spring and are shed each year, usually at the end of winter.
