An Important 33-inch Terrestrial Library Globe By Malby
About the Item
Discoveries.
This fine and unusually large terrestrial globe was most likely issued in London between 1870 and 1880.
This example, the provenance of which can be traced to the venerable antiques firm Mallett and Son in London
and to Metromedia founder John Kluge, consists of 24 gores that, according to the cartouche, include "all the
recent Geographical Discoveries." A later label has been applied that attributes the globe to C. Smith and Son,
Ltd., a publishing firm started by Charles Smith in 1799 and listed as an engraver to the Prince of Wales. The
original cartography by Malby was most likely updated by C. Smith and Son to reflect changing political boundaries.
Three scrolled supports hold the globes within a brass meridian ring on an imposing tri-partite plinth
resting upon scrolled feet with casters.
