The Victorian era, from 1837 to 1901 under Queen Victoria's reign, was a period of cultural development in the United Kingdom. Advancements were made in science, technology, industry and engineering, while literacy and education became more widespread after the 1870 Education Act. The era also saw the expansion of the British Empire and emphasis on moral conduct. Sculptors like Sir Alfred Gilbert, born in 1854, were central to the New Sculpture movement and inspired by classical and medieval works. Gilbert helped elevate Victorian sculpture to new creative heights. Overall, the Victorian period marked a time of progress in English culture, including notable achievements in sculptural arts.
