Antique Japanese Screen Painting in Ink and Colors Depicting Goshawks
About the Item
A striking Japanese antique Edo period screen painting in ink and colors on paper, each of the 6 framed panels featuring a goshawk (hawk) tethered to a perch by a silk cord with the distinctive knots of various samurai clans, with silver leaf applied over paper. The paintings are mounted on lacquered moldings with a brocade border and paper hinges. These renderings bristle with a strength and assurance characteristic of these birds which are painted in a manner inspired by the Kano School, a line of painters tracing its origins back to the fifteenth century. Their screen paintings are found in the greatest temples and castles of Japan.
To collect and maintain hawks was a diversion of great status amongst the warriors of Japan's samurai class who greatly admired the strength and daring of these birds and employed them for the sport of takagari where hawks were used to snare geese and other wild fowl. Late Edo period, circa 1800. Provenance: Imari, Inc. Sausalito, CA
