Max Kuehne Four Panel Double Sided Floor Screen, Signed
About the Item
Max Kuehne (American, 1880-1968) four-panel silvered floor screen. Signed. Circa 1930.
Silver leaf and gessoed wood with incised flowering branches on both sides.
Overall 85-1/8 x 72-3/8 inches; each panel 18 inches wide.
May 2023 restored and consolidated by Wenda Kochanowski of WK Conservation, Chelsea, MA.

A screen consisting of four wooden panels; each panel is attached to the other with three hinges. The decorated surface is a gesso layer with a peach/rose ground that has been water-gilded with silver leaf. The graffito design is an organic, floral motif showing bamboo, dahlia, and roses, among others. The surface has been coated with what appears to be several campaigns of lacquer. The screen is decorated on both sides in the same manner. There are nine hinges in total; each panel is joined by three hinges. Each panel has two steel floor glides on bottom edge.

- Condition:Repaired: Restored and consolidated by Wenda Kochanowski of WK Conservation, Chelsea, MA. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages. Minor fading. Following conservation there are still scuffs, spots of loss; wear along the edges; several splits in the panels; few small holes. Overall clean and stabilized. Presents beautifully. Ready to place.
