About the Item

An outstanding, circa1950s Spanish six fold painted screen in oak and brass, with ink , representing with great detail, a map of Madrid in the 16th century. Dated Madrid 1560 , and highlighted in colours. On this spectacular screen you can see the principal places of Madrid , like the Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol ( The centre of Spain ) , and the river Manzanares, together with Madrid's Coat of Arms. It has to be remarked the quality of this work . This outstanding and timeless screen, was created for one of the houses that the well known Spanish architect, Luis Gutierrez Soto designed in Paseo de La Castellana ( Madrid ) . Additional pictures on request. Madrid Circa 1950s Luis Gutiérrez Soto (Madrid 1900 - Madrid 1977) was a Spanish architect who was born in Madrid on 1900 and died in 1977. He graduated from the Madrid School of Architecture in 1923, working mainly in Madrid where he undertook over of 400 building works.Gutierrez Soto is one of the main representatives of rationalism in Spain, other styles evolved in the fifties and sixties. It was part of the so-called Generation of '25, included within the so-called modernism. in 1958 he was elected to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. Works: This is one of the most prolific architects of his time. His most interesting works are from his younger period where he introduce in Madrid with great success the rationalist architectural style. He made several decorative projects for the Musical Union of 1920, The theatre Beatriz ( 1922 ), The well known, Chicote bar (1931) among others. Gutierrez Soto Architect Madrid theaters: Among his best known works include numerous theatre buildings as Callao (Madrid 1926, in Callao Square), Flower Cinema, currently Conde Duque Madrid Cinema ( 1926 ), Europe Cinema (Madrid 1928), Barceló Cinema (Madrid 1930) today converted into the well known club "Pacha" , Narváez Cinema (1939), Montera Cinema (1939), Rex cinema 1946, Carlos III Cinema (1946 ), and many theatres and the disappeared (Atocha cinema (1928), Actuality Cinema( 1931) , Dos de Mayo Cinema (1932) , Argüelles Cinema( 1933 ). From this creative period are the Barajas Airport ( 1930 ) (now disappeared ) ( The black & white picture ), the Charles III complex (Madrid 1935). Also built several palaces and houses and apartment buildings, residential buildings, Fernandez de los Rios 53 ( street ) and 57 Velázquez street (1932). He also designed numerous cafes, bars and sports and social facilities like the Club de Campo (1930 ) , Air Club (1931) Island Pool on the river Manzanares (now defunct), the Royal Society of pigeon shooting, or beach Madrid. After the Civil War he adopts a historicist style reminiscent of the architecture of Herrera, in which highlights the Wholesale Market of Málaga (1942) (Currently the Contemporary Art Center of Málaga),The Axa Building (1945-46) , The Ministry of Air, replica of the Escorial Monastery, homes for EMPSA (1951), etc. Another of his works is the old Richmond Hotel Madrid (1953-1954), located in the Plaza de la República Argentina and has now been converted into apartments, the parish church of St. Mary of Mount Carmel, located in Ayala 33, Madrid .Luis Gutiérrez Soto was considered the architect of high society, for which he made numerous commissions, most notably the bungalows "The Reef" and "Malibu" on the beach in Torremolinos (Malaga), who created in 1956 for the families Ynzenga-Bird and Sonchen respectively and also houses the Plaza del Doctor Marañón, Paseo de la Castellana in 1957 and Fernandez de la Hoz, number 57 and 82, in Madrid. From the mid-fifties differs third phase, characterized by abandonment of historicism and the adoption of more modern lines.
