About the Item

Rudolph Tegner was a sculptor of monuments, groups, mythological subjects, figures and busts. Tegner was reputedly inspired to become a sculptor after visiting the Acropolis in Athens and some of his works are a fine homage to his Antique muse. He was also influenced by the oeuvre of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), Jean-Baptist Carpeaux (1827-1875) and C. Milles. This so called Neo-romantic Symbolist who liked to mix styles, was controversial at the time. He was admitted at the academy in his hometown in 1890 and he studied in Paris during several years (1893-1897) before moving to the French capital in 1926. In 1904 he made a trip to Spain and Morocco. He exhibited at the Salons in Paris and won a gold medal at the Paris 'Exposition Universelle' in 1900. He built his own, large museum for the exhibition of his own, often monumental oeuvre in 1937-1938 in bunker-like – in concrete almost without windows - Modernist style with it’s façade bearing reference to Antiquity architecture. This 'Aphrodite guiding Eros’ arrow' evoques a crucial moment in a Greek myth. One day on Mount Olympus, the jealous Aphrodite decided she had enough of Psyche. She was very pretty and was often complimented for her beauty. Distressed by Psyche, Aphrodite instructed her son Eros to shoot one of his arrows at Psyche while she was sleeping, to make her fall in love with the first person she would see. Eros accidentally injures himself and falls madly in love with Psyche.
