About the Item
A charming and delightful example of the "playful child" genre of bronzes that proliferated in the early decades of the 20th century -- some of the best examples by important sculptors such as Brenda Putnam and Harriet Frishmuth -- this bronze shows a nude boy balancing on a water jug, his arms akimbo and his face a study in grinning concentration. Most examples of this type were installed as the centerpieces for fountains in the gardens of the well-to-do, and therefore they often showed girls at play in the water, often holding aquatic creatures such as a frogs, ducks or turtles.
