Americana Crazy Quilt, by Ida Rich Williams, 1906
About the Item
“American Crazy Quilt” from 1906 we acquired. It literally has history woven into
the fabric of this extraordinary piece. Quilt Artists were infamous for telling the
story of their families with in the textiles they designed. The pieces are all hand
stitched and embroidered together. American quilting dates back to colonial
times, but the crazy quilts started in the Victorian Era, influenced by Asian art,
which was asymmetrical in nature. Elaborate appliquéd quilts were considered so
difficult an accomplishment, that only they were considered a masterpiece quilt
and became coveted art forms.
