Indian Kashmir Wool Shawl
About the Item
Indian Kashmir wool shawl
Indian, Early 20th Century
Height 316cm, width 166cm
The superb shawl is woollen and was crafted by skilled Indian weavers in the early 20th century. Traditionally shawls were a status symbol and were often gifted to nobility.
A plethora of paisley patterns adorn the large rectangular panel of the shawl, while its centre features a darker-coloured motif. Framing this composition are two borders. The larger one is made up of a repetitive paisley-inspired motif, while the smaller outer border is filled with flowing and scrolling shapes.
Multi-coloured fringing adorns the two shorter sides of the shawl. These wonderfully match the rest of the orange-hued textile.
Celebrating the important Indian craft of shawl making, this textile would be a great addition to one’s collection.
