The Tantalus is of typical form however it is of rare miniature size measuring only 22cm high x 26cm wide. The Tantalus is made from white onyx with scrolling ormolu mounts and an ormolu hinged carry handle. The carry handle is beautifully engraved with scrollwork and blossoming flowers and engraved 'The Tantalus' to one side and 'Betjemann's Patent London' to the other. To the front a small retailer's ormolu plaque reads 'Alexander Clark, Fenchurch Street, London'. This magnificent silver gilt vanity box is veneered in stunning Amboyna. Quadrant brass edging is on the box, along with escutcheons, stringing, and a makers label "Joseph Rodgers & Sons" of Sheffield, cutler to her Majesty. The Writing box of slim rectangular shape with a slightly sloped lid is veneered in exquisite Burr Walnut to the exterior with beautifully shaped brass mounts. The escutcheon sits at the centre of the writing box on a brass mount which also features three monogrammed letters C F E. When opened the box reveals a royal blue velvet writing slope with a gold tooled border framed by an embossed greek key style border. The box is faced in exotic Coromandel wood which is a rare addition to this style of Writing Box. Above the writing slope, there is a partitioned section lined in Satinwood with two glass inkwells and a pen tray with further storage. The secret spring-loaded stationary drawer features a solid Satinwood base complete with small yet elegant dovetail joints, activated by pressing down on the button on the brass mounted plate reading 'Betjemann Patent'. The inside of the writing slope lid bears the retailer plaque 'Charles Henry Manchester.' The box also features the original owner's monogram with the letters "C F E" in multiple locations. Standard Aquarium desk lighter designed by Dunhill. Very rare standard size Aquarium desk petrol lighter, designed by Dunhill back in the 1949. This mechanical lift arm lighter has been designed in England after the world war II. Has been individually crafted as a one of a kind piece by recycling the perspex lucite from the destroyed war airplanes. Composed by four carved pieces and polished steel parts. This example is virtually in mint condition and barely used, showing absolutely no traces of any wear. Weight: 460 Grams, (168.34 Dwt). Measures: 101 mm by 78 mm by 51 mm ( 3.98 x 3.11 x 2.0 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark and signed, "DUNHILL LIGHTER MADE ENGLAND". Alfred Dunhill inherited his father’s London saddlery in 1893. Following the increase in motor car ownership, Alfred developed the business to include motoring accessories, which he called ‘Dunhill’s Motorities’. This included goggles, timepieces, picnic sets, and leather coats, and it wasn’t long before the brand became associated with men’s general motoring attire. They opened two shops in Mayfair and had a catalogue of over 1300 items. Between the 1904 and 1905, Dunhill introduced their ‘Windshield Pipe’, to help drivers combat the effect of wind and travel on their ability to smoke. This marked both the end of the ‘motorities’ focus and their entry into the world of smoking ephemera, and they shortly opened their first tobacconist in 1907 on Duke Street.
