19th Century Caucasian Bordjalou Kazak Rug

About the Item

Woven in the regions around North Armenia and South Georgia, Bordjalou Kazaks use some of the most particular designs among Caucasian rugs. Easily recognizable by their latch-hook designs in diagonal formats, Bordjalou Kazaks combine many rich colors to create timeless warm and earthy rugs. Four lozenge diamonds are lined up along the central axis of this Bordjalou rug and are flanked by hooked zig-zagged lines demonstrating both rhythm and dynamism. The border is decorated with various serrated leaves and rosettes as is the field. A curious human figure is weaved onto one of the ends of the rug. The midnight green background is accentuated by midnight blue, ivory, and cochineal red elements. A highly tribal piece as seen by the plethora of tribal motifs and symbols laid on either side of the zig-zags. The border provides a more floral touch with stylized geometric flowers, rosettes, and serrated leaves.
