Antique Caucasian Sewan Kazak Rug

About the Item

Sewan – Kazak, Central Caucasus Long prized by experts, Sewans like this one are produced near Lake Sewan, which is high in the Caucasus Mountains. This sublime rug demonstrates the aesthetics of a tradition full of countless secular symbols. Elegant and intense, each Caucasian rug from this area uniquely expresses the weaver’s artistic choices. They use designs that are part of a traditional repertoire often transmitted by the clan to which they belong but are incorporated freely as the artists see fit. Geometric motifs are usually arranged spontaneously and do not appear to follow an obligatory pattern. Although these rugs generally have a high degree of precision in design, they reflect the artist’s experience and skill level. As much respect and recognition as the words imply, this rug does not need adjectives. The carpet is clean and ready for use. When Armenia’s borders were at their greatest extent, they comprised three large lakes: Van, Sevan, and Urmia. Today, only Lake Sevan remains located east of Erivan, Armenia, near the border of Azerbaijan and south of Tbilisi, Georgia. On the shore of this lake, one of the most exciting carpets in the Caucasus appeared: the Sewan. Its designs are geometric. Characteristically, Sewan rugs feature a striking shield-shaped medallion with “butterfly wings” covering most of the carpet's area. Motifs with hooks, bushes, and stars in EE or S shapes, as well as flowers and other ornaments, are woven throughout the medallion and the background. The main border usually has stylized flowers, bushes alternating leaves or other Kazak motifs. The minor border has shamrocks and zigzag patterns. Sewan artists prefer intense reds, blues, greens or ivory for the centre field. These colours are interchangeable between the border and the medallion. Different shades of light blue, brown, cinnamon, and golden yellow are woven into the design elements and sometimes the borders and background. Sewan rugs today are known worldwide for their artistic designs and vibrant, natural, vivid and attractive colours. They are a valuable weaving product of the Caucasus region, and there is significant demand for them in the antique carpet market.
