Late 19th Century Colorful Kuba Rug

About the Item

Caucasian rugs are often known for their graphic boldness and color contrast. This graphically sophisticated Kuba presents a highly successful visual alternative to the usual large-scale ornament and open spacing expected with many of the weavings from this region. The central field is composed of colorful stripes that form repeat diamond patterns. An emphasis is placed on color contrast pairing reds and greens, blues and gold, and dark and light. A series of small geometric ornament alternates along the stripes of the field giving several extra dimensions to the drawing adding horizontal, vertical and diagonal layers of depth. It is likely that this composition was borrowed from local and Persian striped domestic textiles. While the scale has been altered the intricacy of design has not. Interestingly, a group of South Persian tribal pile rugs employs the same concept.
