About the Item

Carpet from the collection "From the joys of the Etruscans" designer Linde Burkhardt Hand knotted with the Nepalese knot technique in wool and viscose cotton. According to the Etruscans the gods revealed their will to men through particular signs. The priests were specialized in the interpretation of these signs, one of the main signs derived from the observation of birds. The divination with the birds was based on the study of flight, on their cry or in general on their behavior: if their direction was facing east, the Signal was positive, towards the west negative. In the "Books of Destiny", a collection of ritual prescriptions, the various species of birds such as the goshawk, the sparrow hawk, the woodpecker and the eagle were listed. But for the Etruscans the birds were not only a divinatory symbol, they were also part of their daily life. The painted tombs show us in large numbers scenes of banquets, games, hunting, dances and we often discover, together with everyday objects and domestic animals, birds of all kinds and species.
