Early 19th Century Rose and Blue Khotan Fragment Rug

About the Item

Khotan is an oasis city on the old Silk Road in what is now the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of western China. Geographically and culturally closer to Central Asia than to Beijing, the city and region have a weaving tradition that goes back several centuries. This piece was once a longer runner and has been reduced to form a seating square. Eight-petaled flowers colored in tones of rose, blue, and cream float against a medium brown ground. A Chinese inspired fret-work guard border is drawn using two tones of rose and is encompassed by a frame of several plain blue, rose, and brown stripes. The outer main border, however, is perhaps the most noteworthy and dynamic formed by reciprocal half flowers mirroring the full floral elements of the field.

Kyrgyz Felt Fragment Rug, 19th Century Felt working has a special place among the domestic arts of the nomads of Eurasia. Produced more easily than woven textiles and with incredible insulating properties, felt was vital for the construction of yurts and life on the harsh steppe. In the Kyrgyz tradition, felt pieces composed of sewn and backed reciprocal designs are known as ‘shyrdak’. Despite their utilitarian function, nomadic craftswomen imbued their felt pieces with the same care and artistry that defined their material culture. Nonetheless, the lifespan of a shyrdak was relatively short, about 10 to 15 years, and older pieces were frequently recycled for scrap or integrated back into newer production. Hence, older pieces are much more rare than one might expect. This square Central Asian shyrdak makes use of antique vegetable...

  • Stunning Early 20th Century Khotan Rug from East Turkestan
    Located in San Francisco, CA
Situated along the ancient Silk Roads running between China and Central Asia, Khotan is an oasis city in the region of East Turkestan in what is now Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region in northwest China. Reflecting the geography in which it was woven, this piece blends elements of Central Asian and Chinese design. A central medallion is drawn in the center of an abstract field which actively combines a host of well-spaced floating motifs. Butterflies, shrubs and smaller floral forms are drawn spaciously spanning the area surrounding the medallion and in between two planted pots on either end of the field. Two borders derived from Chinese traditions frame the composition. With their pleasing light palette and spacious drawing, Khotan weavings...
