19th Century Peking Blu Rug with Longevity Deer and Dragons, ca 1870

About the Item

These rugs were made exclusively for the residences of the court dignitaries: the use of the carpet in China started relatively late and imported from the Middle East, it was not part of the daily, it was considered a luxury item and used exclusively as decoration. They are distinguished by the elegance of the tones and the refinement of the design, the decorative themes are those classic of the tradition. Longevity seems to be the theme of our carpet that has in the four corners the deer that is considered the only animal capable of finding the sacred mushrooms of immortality. In the rich border you can see the dragon (also stylized in the central medallion), the knot, the clouds and the perennial flame. The innermost border shows instead the ideogram of Shou, a powerful symbol of Asian origin that represents long life and immortality, which comes from Taoist philosophy and that connects to the laws of nature, recognizing it as the True Way or the Path towards enlightenment.
