Antique Tibetan Tsukdruk Rug with Tiger Pelt Pattern

About the Item

Tsukdruk rugs are possibly the most representative examples of the Tibetan nomadic weaving tradition. Woven with lanolin-rich highland wool, these come in narrow strips constructed on backstrap looms, and are part of the material culture of the nomads inhabiting the high pastures of the Himalayan mountains. Patterns are typically simple, either completely open fields with beautiful colour gradations or, more rarely, embellished with pattern which are representative of the Tibetan iconography. Here the chocolate brown background is decorated by parallel and offset rows to small motifs derived from the stylisation of the tiger pelt. Tiger rugs were considered a symbol of high rank in Tibet, employed almost exclusively on weavings which belonged to the religious as well as secular upper class. The shaped format suggests that it might have been intended for use as a horse saddle cover.

Tigers are not native animals of the Tibetan plateau; however their presence in neighbouring countries such as China and India partly explain its depiction, both in a realistic as well as in an abstract fashion, on a specific group of antique Tibetan weavings. Following a series of important exhibitions and publications, rugs with this design have become exceedingly rare and sought-after. On this rare monastic example, the tiger pelt rug...

This rug belongs to a small group of weavings recently defined as RKO because of their distinctive design, consisting of a sequence of bands with strokes and dashes that are reminiscent of the sonic sound waves present on the logo of the RKO motion picture company. The structural characteristics of this piece, together with the type of wool employed, indicate its origin to the district of Kansu, of which we know only fifteen examples. The field pattern is clearly a rendition of a tiger pelt...
