Antique Ivory Background Amritsar Carpet

About the Item

Amritsar had the reputation of being a very prestigious weaving center during the Mughal Empire. Its nineteenth century production is characterised by pastel shades, large-scale patterns and by a soft and silky wool of the pashmina type. Together with Agras, Amritsar carpets were commissioned by the British nobility during the colonial period to decorate their castles and manors and represent one of the most desirable carpets in today's interior decoration. Our example is distinguished by a well-spaced all-over pattern of palmettes and arabesques orchestrated by a refined choice of palette, made possible by the high quality of the materials employed as well as the excellent preservation.
