XXth Century Blue, Dark Red and Ivory Indian Agra Medallions, ca 1920

About the Item

The carpet, like other artistic artifacts of Moghul’s India, reflects the components of that original fusion that arose from the complex cultural encounter between the Indian and Muslim worlds. The taste of court, especially during the reign of Akbar, influenced every artistic manifestation. The major Persian miniaturists, who made use of Indian labour, who knew the techniques of dyeing and weaving, and had a rich experience in the processing of wool yarns, were called to collaborate in the preparation of the carpets, of cotton, hemp and silk. After the fall of the Moghul in 1738, the art of the carpet flourished in the nineteenth century, proposing some masterpieces elaborated by the free interpretation of the ancient schemes. The Moghul Art Collection. The dominant colours are blue, dark red and ivory. Very rare in the carpets of Agra the geometric design in the style of our carpet, a design that has a clear derivation from the motives of Turkmen carpets.
