Carpets from northwest Persia are in a class of their own. Appreciated for their strong geometric style, refined construction and rich colors, rugs from Heriz, Serapi and Bakshaish are regional cousins who share common origins.
These northwestern districts were home to dozens of niche villages and communities nestled in mountainous regions and plunging valleys. Together, these distinct settlements and isolated communities formed a strong carpet production network that maintained its international prominence centuries later. The distinctive northwest Persian geometry of ancient Heriz Serapi and Bakshaish rugs is one of many iconic traits these regional designs share.
The Heriz district has always stood out for its creations of old carpets with an attractive aesthetic. These elegant rugs, with soft colors and rich patterns, continue to attract new generations of consumers and collectors.
Antique Heriz rugs are valued for their elegant patina and rich colors that are often attributed to the region. Royal terracotta reds, light Persian blues, unique green and creamy accent colors are synonymous with the region's unmistakable coloring.
The technique of abrash, or intentional variation within a color tone, is masterfully used in the finest antique Heriz rugs.
These colors, in particular blue and green, are proof of rarity which indicates that (the pigmentation) the dyes used are totally plant-based in nature. This makes it possible to date the manufacture before 1910. Only after this period did chemical dyes appear.
Faced with steady and growing demand over the past decade, the finest antique pieces have become rare and have increased significantly in value and esteem.
