Antique 1910s Persian Bibibaft Bakhtiari Rug, Butterfly Motif, 7' x 10'

About the Item

This 1910 Bibibaft Bakhtiari rug consists of a cotton warp, handspun wool weft and handspun hand-knotted wool pile. The deep indigo, bright reds, pinks and blues were all created using organic vegetable dyes. This carpet originates from the Nooch village of the Bakhtiari region and is a "Bibibaft" carpet, meaning that it was woven by a high-ranking weaver within the tribe. "Bibibaft" literally means "Queen weave," and therefore the weaver of such a carpet is oftentimes the wife of the chief of the village. Moreover, she is also one of the village's most talented weavers, and demonstrates her skills through the high quality of the weave and the uniqueness of the design and coloration seen in this carpet. Its butterfly design depicts the seasonal migration of butterflies in different shapes and colors. It is an exceptional one-of-kind piece and is in excellent antique condition. The size is 72" x 10'. Orley Shabahang takes pride in selecting and curating the finest vintage and antique carpets, ensuring that the preservation of this ancient art form will endure for generations to come.
