  • Antique Persian Mahal rug with Ivory, Pink, All-Over Pattern, hand knotted wool
    Located in Birmingham, AL
8’7 x 12’8 Circa 1910-1920s. Mahal weavers we’re so creative! These are some of my favorite rugs because they are incredibly well made and so artistic. Have you ever seen a piece like this?? Excellent condition! The ivory field is very rare for these pieces. One end is finished with traditional fringe and the other has a small flatweave finish. This is woven from the leftover warp and weft on the loom. I find this finish to feel organic and is such a nice textural change from the exactness of the wool pile. The fact that this small flatweave end is so well preserved tells us that this rug has been well cared for and well preserved for all of its long life. The Oriental carpets from Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level. Therefore, they use the loose to moderate weave, and somewhat thicker pile, similar to nomadic and tribal rugs. Nevertheless, they have now taken an equal seat beside the highly reputed and more finely knotted Ferahan and Mahajiran Sarouk...

  • Vintage Persian Mahal rug, Early 20th Century, Blue All over Pattern, wool
    Located in Birmingham, AL
8’3 x 12’1** I love how the corners on this all over pattern frame in the navy field. Take a look at the finger or comb-like pattern that divides the corners from the field. Lovely! This rug is not an exact rectangle- it ranges from 11’6-12’1 long x 8’1-8’3 wide. It has so much character for a handmade piece! It’s not uncommon for these handmade masterpieces to vary in shape and size in this way - it’s a nod to the artistry and the talented hands that so carefully wove it. The wool pile is low and even. **The size ranges from 11’6-12’1 long x 8’1-8’3 wide The Oriental carpets from Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level. • Vintage Persian Malayer Rug with an All Over Pattern and Black Wool Border
    Located in Birmingham, AL
7’3 x 10’4 The rich black wool on the border of this stunning Malayer is such a rare find! I love the portion of abrash that appears through the center of the rug. Abrash is the subtle color change you notice in the wool. This is due to small batch plant, vegetable, floral (and even insect!) dyes being dyed in small batches and varying a bit one to the next. This rug is in excellent vintage condition, low even pile. The Oriental carpets from Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level.
