About the Item

From the first half of the 20th c., Persia, a low pile Kashan room sized wool carpet. A traditional lozenge Kashan medallion is encompassed with an allover floral pattern on a red ground. Having incredible detail and texture, this hand knotted wool antique Persian Kashan carpet is a true beauty. The thin double weft is a pale blue color and the wool is beautifully soft. The sophisticated design and refined color palette woven into this piece work together to create a truly classic look. A traditional lozenge Kashan medallion is encompassed with an allover floral pattern. Graceful corner spandrels assimilate seamlessly into the red field. Kashan carpets are one of the most important of the refined urban antique carpets that are the direct legacy of the Golden Age of Persian Weaving of the reign of the famous patron of the arts, Shah Abbas, in the 16th and early 17th-centuries. Rugs and carpets were closely woven using a cotton foundation with a Persian knot. By the early 1900s the weavers of Kashan had mastered the curvilinear designs that are now recognized as typical of Kashan weaving and evidenced in this carpet.
