Red Turkish Kars Carpet, circa 1940s

About the Item

This boldly geometric long carpet features a red field with dark blue hexagonal subfield enclosing a pendant oblong red medallion and an olive inner medallion with an enormous reciprocal pattern in red and dark blue. The dark brown single border shows a color panelled herringbone chain. Ivory tulips grow from the ends of the dark blue subfield. The weave is coarse and the effect is bold and excitingly rough.

    Located in New York, NY
This Persian Qashqai carpet circa 1940 was created using a wool warp, wool weft, hand-knotted pure wool pile and natural vegetable dyes. The central lion design is rather striking in the way it contrasts the carpet's red field, as well as in its detailed facial features. In Persian folklore, the lion symbolizes kingship, prestige, and the protection of sacred spaces. Its power is beautifully conveyed by the weaver of this piece, who created this carpet for ceremonious purpose. Taking a closer look at the border, one can see Qashqai villagers dancing in celebratory robes, indicating that this was likely woven as a wedding carpet...
