Sultanabad Carpet
About the Item
Carpets from Sultanabad in Central Persia are renowned for maintaining an exceptional degree of elegance while using a larger scale of design and thick lustrous wool. It was this aesthetic, so compatible with European interiors of the late nineteenth-century, that attracted Western interest and admiration for these weavings. This grand carpet maintains the same qualities that uphold the popularity of Sultanabad carpets to this day. That said, this piece has an added design history that is quintessentially classical and Persian. The multi-directional arrangement of palmettes on a vivid red ground, compounded with a linked palmette border with a green ground using highlights of gold and aubergine, hearken back to seventeenth-century, lac-ground Isfahan carpets of the Safavid era. While the color palette and style of drawing are certainly the product of the late nineteenth-century and lac has been replaced with madder red, the fundamentals of design reflect back a further three hundred years.
