About the Item
This Persian Qashqai carpet circa 1940 was created using a wool warp, wool weft, hand-knotted pure wool pile and natural vegetable dyes. The central lion design is rather striking in the way it contrasts the carpet's red field, as well as in its detailed facial features. In Persian folklore, the lion symbolizes kingship, prestige, and the protection of sacred spaces. Its power is beautifully conveyed by the weaver of this piece, who created this carpet for ceremonious purpose. Taking a closer look at the border, one can see Qashqai villagers dancing in celebratory robes, indicating that this was likely woven as a wedding carpet, highly valued as a central token in the wedding ceremony and ritual. This rug measures 3'10" x 6', and it is in excellent vintage condition.
