Antique Tree Kazak Rug

About the Item

The Yellow field scattered with minor stylized flower heads, hooked panels and minute cross-motifs around a column of ivory octagonal panels containing radiating flower heads and minute cross-motifs flanked on either side by ivory and blue angular trees in a shaded light blue, gold and beige border between zigzag and linked vine stripes. The "Tree Kazak" rug is one whose iconography stands out clearly from the other well-known Kazak types. Unlike the medallions of various shapes and symbolism, these rugs are covered with immediately recognizable plants forms. The motif seems to have been adopted into a number of other Kazak rugs which have different proportions and in particular different borders, but there is a core group, of which the present rug is probably the archetype, which share various features. They tend to have one, two or three columns of (usually three) trees flanking central octagonal medallions. Measures: 6 x 10.

In circa 1179 a young man who would grow up to be Cinggis Qahan (Ghengis Khan) was aided by the son of the Chieftain of the Arulat clan. The young man was Bo'orcu. In the Yuan ch'ao pi-shih, Quatrain 205, it is recorded that later in life Cinggis Qahan said "Let Bo'orcu govern the ten thousand of the right hand which take the Altai as pillow." In other words the Qahan gave a proto-tribal unit to a key general.
