Swedish Flatweave Rug Rollakan Cross Motif, 1950-1970

About the Item

This Swedish kilim rug measure 214 x 130 cm and is handmade with classic flat weave technique. Many of these carpets were hanged on walls, behind people’s backs, and on the backrests of chairs, reason why they are called Röllakan in Swedish, meaning back cloth. Röllakan are part of a cultural heritage and the oldest found in Sweden is from 1710. Swedish flat weaves are usually made with linen warp and wool weft, however in this specimen the warp is made by cotton. The technique is simple, based on plain weaving where each weft thread crosses the warp threads by passing over one, then under the next and so on. The fringes are tied up in small braids. The decoration is simple but also dignified, tidy but not monotonous, with stylized motifs that form a colored frame inside the light field. The thin border in warm brown underlines the presence of the artifact. It will be perfect under your favorite armchair and will cheer up your reading moments!
