About the Item
Authentic Vintage Swedish Handmade Wool Rug by Sigvard Bernadotte
Size: 6'2" × 8'0" (187 × 243 cm).
Few Swedish rug designers had a life as interesting and adventurous, as Sigvard Bernadotte. Born in 1907 in Drottningholm as the second son of the King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden and Margaret, the Duchess of Scania, Sigvard had a quite a reputation to live up to. Unlike his older brother, Gustaf Adolf, Sigvard paid a great attention to his education. He studied at Lundbergs school and in 1926 became the first of the Bernadotte family to earn the bachelor’s degree. An avid reader, he indulged himself in numerous books, especially those about the history of art and politics, but it was his unique vintage Scandinavian rugs that earned him fame.
This stunning Swedish Rya rug was woven in the mid 20th century, circa 1940. Its astonishing design and superb quality were achieved thanks to the experience and knowledge of its designer, Sigvard Bernadotte. This vintage rug has a minimalist design rendered with an irregular stripe pattern. The whole is bordered by a simple frame made of thin lines. The color palette accompanying the pattern is composed mostly of neutral shades of beige and just a tiny hint of gray and baby blue.
