20th Century Pink, Green, Blue Central Medallion Turkish Oushak, circa 1970

About the Item

Oushak carpets originate in the small city of Oushak in central-western Anatolia, just south of Istanbul. Unlike most Turkish rugs, the Oushak rugs were strongly influenced by the Persian tradition. Almost since the beginning of the Ottoman Empire, Oushak has been an important centre for the production of Turkish carpets. After the design revolution, in the late fifteenth century, Oushak began to produce carpets for the western market that appreciated the superb wool and natural dyes. The Oushak are characterized by a thick knot and high pile weaving. Particularly the color palette, which is detached from tradition. The designs are generally based on geometric patterns with central medallion designs or smaller medallions positioned in various ways, as in our example.
