  • Antique Yastik Turkish Anatolian Rug, The Sun
    Located in Evanston, IL
Explore the legacy of Anatolian rugs, a term that encompasses the rich tapestry of carpets woven in Anatolia and its surrounding regions. Geographically, this area aligns with the historical dominion of the Ottoman Empire, a territory where the art of rug-making flourished. In ancient Anatolia, where harsh winters were a reality, ingenious weavers turned to the abundant resource of lamb's wool to craft thick-pile rugs that provided both warmth and comfort. Over millennia, this tradition evolved and was carried forth by nomadic Turks, eventually leaving an indelible mark on human culture and society. Our magnificent early 20th century Antique Yastik...

Antique Turkish silk rug Size: 6'0" × 9'0" (182 × 274 cm) This antique circa-1920 Turkish silk rug features a large oval medallion in faded red and an intricate design of floral and geometric abstractions and arabesques in shades of red and inky blue against a field of ivory. The muted patina of the antique carpet is a staple of Sivas Rug design and contributes to its unique look. Shapes such as the boteh, the paisley shape that represents leaves or pinecones in traditional antique oriental rugs, can be seen throughout. Although Turkish rugs have a rich and varied history, the use of silk is a comparatively new development as silk piled carpets made in Turkey do not date before 1870. Starting with the early 20th century, silk pile carpets began to be knotted in Turkey using silver and gold threads with patterns based upon 16th century Imperial Safavid Iranian carpets.

Turkish rugs (also referred to as Anatolian rugs) are, arguably, the rugs that started it all. These carpets were among the first wave of Oriental antique carpets to be exported into Europe. The vintage Turkish rugs were prized commodities and artistically influential pieces. The designs of Turkish rugs such as the iconic guls, prayer rugs and small repeating patterns found on these carpets, worked their way into the iconic paintings of the European masters, including Memling, Lotto, Bellini, Hans Holbein and many others. These painters were inspired so much by Turkish rugs and the design motifs they feature that the artists have lent their names to some of these famous Turkish patterns. One of the most famous artists that incorporated rugs from Turkey in his painting was the great and iconic 16th century painter Hans Holbein. The styles of Turkish rugs...
