Minimalist Anatolian Accent Rug, c. 1930s
About the Item
Rugs such as this example have been woven for centuries in Anatolia, Turkey's mountainous western region, and are widely appreciated as highly desireable tribal weavings thanks to their simple, graphic designs and top-quality wool.
This striking example, dating to the 1930s, features an especially minimalist design, even compared to other members of its type, with a soft grey tone across the central field, framed by an ivory border - owing to the natural, undyed wool used in its construction, all of the colours in this piece have subtle variations in tone, adding a real sense of depth and charm to its otherwise striped-back design
Retained in excellent condition, this rug would make a stylish addition to any setting.

- 19th Century Oushak Accent RugLocated in London, GBThe weaving workshops of Western Anatolia, where Oushak carpets such as this piece were originally made, have a rich history, stretching back at least as far as the Early Modern era – as the 14th Century explorer Marco Polo once wrote, ‘here they make the most beautiful silks and carpets in the world, and with the most beautiful colours.’ During the 19th Century, these pieces were highly sought after in the West, inspiring many of the designs of European weavings of the period, and can be found in grand historic homes across the UK and Europe. This late-19th Century Oushak rug boasts a charming, warm colour palette, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes, with saffron, salmon, and ivory tones over a light terracotta ground. The design employs scrolling floral and botteh motifs in the spandrels...Category
