Vintage Minimalist Anatolian Copper Tulu Rug

About the Item

A rare and relatively early example of central Anatolian Tulu rug, distinguished by a completely open field in a very unusual shade of copper. Tulus of this type are among the earliest extant and are distinguished by a larger format. These were used in the tent and provided thermal insulation during the nomadic cold winters in the Toros Mountains in central Turkey. Tulus represent one of the earliest forms of pile weaving, used in this region since pre-historic times. What makes them particularly appealing is their ancient modernity, their simplicity charged with textural warmth.

Warp: wool, ivory Weft: wool, ivory, 3-6 shots between knotted rows Knot: symmetrical, weaving direction adjacent to niche, no warp depression Knot count: 4H x 3V = 12 knots/square inch Selvages: three sets of paired warps Ends: weft-faced plain weave; top with corded fringes Colours: ivory, maroon (corrosive), light green, red, grey blue, camel, orange (7) This rug is featured in our current web exhibition entitled 'Like a Prayer...
