About the Item
This is the hand-tuffted version of AKI rug B, made in collaboration with the visual artist Ria Alexandrou.
Painting with several mediums, sketching, making tapestries or setting up installations, Ria translates the time and its impact in our memory as images or spaces to be experienced. Her practice, is informed by literary texts, sociopolitical aspects of living while commenting on the contrasting aspects of materials in relation to the space that withholds them. Currently she creates carpets and tapestries with a tufting gun, exploring it as a painting or sculptural medium. Her latest body of work, invokes sensorial memory through objects which are apparently ordinary such as carpets, by (mis)-placing and photograph them as outdoor installations, interventions in the urban space, ruins of the past and the future.
Ria Alexandrou (b.1990, Greece) is a visual artist based in Cyprus, she graduated from the Athens School of Fine Arts in 2014, she had two solo exhibitions (2016), (2021) and presented her works in various group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad.
AKI rug B is an organic formed rug, which in combination with the elements that surround it create different shapes, as a negative space drawing on the floor.
Aiming to embrace the unexpectancy of the organic, the AKI rugs is a series of flat cut-out surfaces that inspire to both frame and mark new terrains on horizontal and vertical surfaces.

Studio Christine Kalia
ChristineKalia is a design studio exploring modes of spatial relations between architectural, interior and product design. The studio's vision is calibrated towards ecocentric design and contemporary aesthetics; where the end products manifest the prime materials. The various collections take different approaches to this design mode, often seen as sitting in-between reality and daydreaming. The “coming from” of each design’s unique materiality is carefully crafted towards a “belonging with”, where the sophisticated design of the studio’s products is complementing any environment, in order to elevate its aesthetic aura. Christine Petrou is the creative director and founder of ChristineKalia since 2016. Born in Larnaca in 1990, she is a trained architect with studies in Cyprus and the United Kingdom. Through her practice, Christine reshapes often found materials into contemporary design pieces of domestic use, bringing nature closer to the human environment. She designed for commissions in Cyprus and United Kingdom while her practice was featured on various publications.
