Circa 1920 Oversized Antique English Wool Donegal Carpet, Red Field

About the Item

A luxurious royal carpet with a stylized motif design and all over field. This carpet comes from the most beautiful part of Ireland, Donegal. An area that despite appearing isolated has been able to maintain its traditions like weaving rugs. The first Donegal carpets were significantly influenced by the Irish and local history of the region. However, Persian and Turkish techniques can be identified in these carpets. Donegal carpets gradually made their way into the heart of influential persons. And people like King Edward, Queen Victoria, and other prominent members of the royal family purchased this splendid type of rug. In addition, Donegal rugs can be found at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and even the White House. Today, many of the world's leading designers are interested in using these carpets in their prestigious projects. Very attractive and elegant rug.

Antique Donegal Carpets, woven in the town of Killybegs, County Donegal, from the 1890s onwards, represent some of the most unique and highly sought-after European weavings - originally, a Western interpretation of earlier Turkish Oushak carpets, incorporating a wide array of design elements borrowed from both the Arts and Crafts movement and traditional Celtic art. These pieces are also known for their remarkably high quality, thanks to the centuries-old tradition of wool-working belonging to the people of Donegal - early examples can be found in places as prestigious as Dublin Castle, the University of Notre Dame, and the US Whitehouse. This piece, dating to the early 20th Century, features a wonderfully fresh colour palette, and an elegant composition inspired by Arts and Crafts textiles...
