European Modernist Carpet, circa 1920
About the Item
Softer and imaginative designs that were not derived from known historical prototypes emerged in Europe during the modernist movement of the early 20th century. The floral elements in this delightful carpet conform to all of the traditional components of an oriental rug; medallion, corner solution, borders. The result, however is a strikingly Avantgarde design, making something new through the confines of history. Woven on Spanish or possible French-Algerian looms during the 1920s, this carpet is constructed from wool knotted pile using a symmetrical knot on cotton warps and hemp wefts.
