French Art Deco Rug Attributed to Ivan da Silva Bruhns

About the Item

The rare examples which can be attributed to Ivan da Silva Bruhns (1881-1980) are among the most sought after French Art Deco carpets. Characterized by geometric elements clearly influenced by the stylistic trends of the artistic avant-garde such as Cubism. Da Silva Bruhns carpets were often commissioned by the 'artistes-décorateurs' for the luxurious interiors of the Parisian upper class. In the present rug the field is composed of rectangular mocha brown motifs alternating to cluster of triangles in blush pink over an ivory background. The result is a three-dimensional arrangement of these forms that is quite typical of Synthetic Cubism. Stylistically it is precisely in the style of Da Silva Bruhns, and could very well be a rare unsigned piece designed by him.
