GIACOMO BALLA "FLOWERS + SPACE" Tapestry worked by hand in chain stitch

About the Item

Handcrafted chain-stitch tapestry with pure wool yarns on cotton canvas. Produced thanks to the willingness of Giacomo Balla's daughters, Luce and Elica, who showed Elio Palmisano designs for textiles drawn up by their father, which remained only at the design stage. With the enthusiastic approval of Luce and Elica, Palmisano decided to carry out those unfinished works. "Flowers + Space" made in 1968 from a 1918 design is the first of these artifacts made in a very small number of pieces, which have now become part of the history of Italian artistic weaving. Elio Palmisano's atelier represents one of the few Italian businesses (if not the only one) to have produced a large number of tapestries and carpets during the second half of the 20th century, in synergy with contemporary artists. From 1968 to about 2005 Palmisano created a collection of nearly 320 subjects, including tapestries and rugs, designed by renowned artists and designers from Giacomo Balla to Ettore Sottsass. Using ancient craft techniques, Palmisano has truly succeeded in weaving the scenario of 20th century Italian art. Elio Palmisano's manufacture has been much talked about in the nearly four decades of its existence, during which his works were appreciated and valued especially by the new design world.
