'Niches' Contemporary Design Rug by Simone Haug for Alberto Levi Gallery

About the Item

In 'Niches', the contemporary Swiss artist Simone Haug takes up the stacked niche element, especially as seen on old central Anatolian Tulu rugs, and develops a pattern which unites an archaic past to an optimistic vision of the future. Yellow is a colour that Simone Haug normally uses in her artworks with discretion as it has an intimate connotation. Like a confession, she decides to use it here to clothe the space defined by the niche, framed at its base by a red straight line, and set against an ivory background. The niche gradually disintegrates into low-relief, irregularly shaped black quadrilateral devices while still maintaining a memory of its previous configuration. The arrangement of these low-piled elements is strongly reminiscent of Neolithic settlement structures, as seen in the Neolithic town of Çatal Hüyük, located in the central Anatolian plains. A single, detached yellow element stands out from this settlement, like a satellite of hope, marking perhaps the next stage of human evolution. The textural high/low technique adopted here for the pile further reinforces this evolutionary concept. It also offers a bridge between the domain of Art and Design, this being a border territory where Simone Haug often finds herself operating. 'Niches' is hand woven with Persian knots employing high quality, hand-spun New Zealand wool with superior fibre length, which makes the pile especially soft and durable at the same time. It is woven with a high/low textural structure that is reminiscent of Mid-Century Modern Scandinavian rugs. The configuration of this particular quality is such as to ensure that we achieve the desired texture, which differs from the regular qualities being produced in the market. In order to perfect this texture, the mill has developed a particular washing technique consisting of multiple runs. 'Niches' is offered in a limited edition and in a specific format, although we are able to produce this quality also in custom sizes.
