Vintage Spanish Rug, circa 1940, 5' x 7'4

About the Item

Vintage Spanish rug, circa 1940 5' x 7'4.. One does not think of Spain and rugs, however weaving has been a part of Spanish culture for hundreds of years going back to when Spain was part of the Islamic world. This particular rug is from much later circa 1940s and is a lovely example with a wonderful open field with floral design enclosed by a border continuing the theme.

  • Antique French Aubusson Rug, circa 1890, 8' x 9'
    Located in New York, NY
Antique French Aubusson rug, circa 1890. Aubusson carpets are pile less and tapestry woven from that town to the southwest of Paris, by a group of independent weavers working under Royal or State protection. The designs are strictly classical, neoclassical or Victorian. They are virtually never “oriental”. The pattern wefts are wool with silk and/or metal thread for details in the more finely woven examples. Sizes tend toward the squarish and pieces 30’ by 30’ are not unknown. The 18th-19th century French clients included the nobility and haute bourgeoisie. Aubusson carpets were also exported to England and are often to be found in country houses. Light colors are the most popular and dark toned pieces are very rare. Besides traditional Louis furniture...

  • Antique Irish Donegal Arts & Crafts Runner Rug, circa 1900 6' x 14'11
    Located in New York, NY
Antique Irish Donegal Arts & Crafts Runner rug circa 1900, 6' x 14'11. Sort of an Irish Oushak with a slate blue ground displaying a repeat of semi-geometric buds and flowers along with sawtooth medallions. Unlike other Donegal's, there is nothing Celtic about this unique carpet. The palette is a variant on blue and white, but not oriental. The narrow orders just barely constrain the dynamic field which pushes underneath in all directions. The spacious layout makes the carpet seem larger than it is. The Arts and Crafts movement originated in England in the second half of the 19th century as a reaction against mass-produced machine-made goods. William Morris, the founder of Morris and Co., designed rugs, tapestries, wallpaper, textiles, and entire interiors. The large, luxurious antique European carpets produced under his direction are luxurious and stunning in their integration of European and Oriental styles. Another designer in the Morris circle was C.F. Voisey who worked on carpets as well as textiles and wallpapers. The style spread to Donegal, Ireland, where Alexander Morton established a workshop around 1900 to weave carpets, often incorporating indigenous Celtic motives. American designers further spread the handmade, hand crafted look as the Mission style, particularly popular in the West. Arts and Crafts carpets are thick, rustic and usually employ allover patterns. The rich, heavy pile comes from local Irish sheep...
