18th Century French Patinated Wooden Armchair

About the Item

A throne-like silhouette and a rich patina give this antique chair an air of august dignity. Built in France in the 18th Century — before the advent of electric light — the deep burnished polish and warm ruby hue of the wood would have reflected the light from candles and oil-lamps beautifully in the evenings. Visible pegs and mortises showcase the impressive craftsmanship that went into the making of this piece. The paneling of the backrest, the contoured crest and carved ears provide subtle decorative details which add rustic embellishment to the handsome high-backed form.
