18th Century Pair of Beechwood Louis XV Fauteuil

About the Item

This lovely pair of period chairs circa 1750-1760 were made in France during the reign of Louis XV. Light and fun these small-scale chairs are comfortable and well crafted. The lessening of rigid formality at court demanded many new forms and quantities of chairs. Designs tended to be more towards comfort and easy living and less like elevated thrones as during the reign of Louis XIV. These Fauteuil or open-arm chairs are cartouche-shaped with padded backs and serpentine upholstered seats in molded carved frames. The backs have flower head cresting and the whole rests on delicate cabriole legs. The color of the wood runs from a dry old surface that is light and silvery to a slightly richer color depending on wear but have an overall old world effect. Constructed with pegs all the members are tight and in good order. The current upholstery is almost brand new and from a fine fabric house. The pattern and color a light green with red and pale to dark brown highlights is exotic without being overwhelming.
